QUEENSLAND

HOMICIDE AND RELATED OFFENCES

There were 116 victims of Homicide and related offences recorded in Queensland during 2016, the highest number of victims since the beginning of the time series in 2010. Between 2015 and 2016, the number of victims of Attempted Murder increased by 59% from 46 victims to 73 victims. The number of victims of Murder decreased by 33%, from 55 victims in 2015 to 37 victims in 2016. (Table 6)

From 2015 to 2016 the number of female victims of Homicide increased by 53% (or 19 victims), while the number of male victims decreased by 6% (or four victims). Despite the decrease, males made up 53% of Victims of Homicide (61 victims). (Table 7)

For the second time since the beginning of the time series in 2010, Males were more likely to be victimised by a stranger (59% or 36 victims) than someone they knew (39% or 24 victims). From 2015 to 2016 the number of females victimised by a stranger increased by 18 victims to their highest levels for the time series, but in 2016 female victims were more likely to know their offender (55% or 30 victims). In 2016, of all Homicide victims:
  • 69% occurred at a residential location (80 victims)
  • 78% involved the use of a weapon (91 victims) (Tables 8 & 9)


SEXUAL ASSAULT

The number of victims of Sexual assault in Queensland increased for the fifth consecutive year to 4,349 victims in 2016. Four out of five victims (82%) of Sexual assault were female (3,570 victims). (Tables 6 & 7)

More than half (53%) of all female victims of Sexual assault were aged between 10 and 19 years. Victims aged between 0 and 14 accounted for more than half (55% or 426 victims) of male Sexual assault victims. (Table 7)

In 2016 Sexual assault victimisation was experienced most frequently at a residential location (70%, or 3,062 victims). Over two-thirds of victims knew their offender (72% or 3,122 victims). For victims who knew their offender, the offender was more likely to be a non-family member (55% or 1,710 victims). Non-family member includes a variety of relationships such as ex-partners, foster parents, teachers, acquaintances, colleagues, friends, etc. (Tables 8 & 11)


ROBBERY

The number of Robbery victims in Queensland increased by 17% between 2015 and 2016 (up from 1,380 victims to 1,615 victims). Robbery most commonly occurred (42%) at an ‘other location’ (which includes a range of locations such as Retail, Banking, Service Station, etc., see Glossary), and more than half of all Robberies involved the use of a weapon (53% or 857 victims). PROPERTY CRIME

Between 2015 and 2016, the number of victims of Other theft rose by 12% to 110,307 victims, which was the largest number of victims recorded since the beginning of the time series in 2010. Two in five victims of Other theft reported the offence as occurring at a retail location (41%), which increased by 16% from 39,551 victims in 2015, to 45,681 victims in 2016. The number of victims of Motor vehicle theft increased by 19%, from 8,576 victims in 2015 to 10,172 victims in 2016. The majority (57%) of Motor vehicle theft occurred at a residential location (1,780 victims). (Tables 6 & 8)

The number of victims of Unlawful entry with intent increased by 6%, from 32,483 victims in 2015, to 34,321 victims in 2016. The majority of victims (67%) had property stolen during the incident (23,044 victims). (Table 6)
